Retrieved from: https://pxhere.com/en/photo/1042903 By: Chris V The other day, my family and I got a call from my grandma. The novel coronavirus had infected a nearby nursing home, which just happened to be the nursing home my great-grandma was in. I now keep thinking, "What if she gets it? What if something happens to her?". At this time, there is tons of fear and terror about what has happened and what could happen with the spread of this new virus. But, we also struggle with fear and doubts about other things in life; fears and anxiety can pop up out of nowhere and plague us. Girls, God doesn't want us to be enslaved in fear! He's given us His Word, the Bible, full of verses about handling the fear and anxiety that Satan uses to try to shut us down. So, here are my top five verses I pull out when fear tries to take control of my life. 1. Isaiah 41:10"Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand". This verse is one I've been hearing a lot lately, and it's super encouraging to me! This verse tells us that God's with us and there for us, through thick and thin. (Kind of like paper and glue!) Also, this verse tells us that God will give us strength and help to get through whatever we're going through, from being stuck at home to losing close friends and family members. 2. Joshua 1:9"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go". This verse tells us that God will be with us wherever we go. We could go to the ends of the earth, even to the outreaches of the galaxy, and God will be with us. Why is this important? Because God is always with us, there's nothing to fear, even in the darkest situation. 3. Psalm 27:1"The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" David was running for his life when he wrote Psalm 27, and he chose to trust the Lord with his situation. You can do the same too! Things may not turn out the way you want them to, but God's plan for your life will always and forever turn out perfectly for your life (Romans 8:28). Also, David acknowledged that God was with him; therefore there is no reason to fear! Ladies, let's try to follow David's example in faith, and trust God throughout every situation. 4. Psalm 23:4"Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me". We could be in a scary situation or have our head full of what-ifs, and things could be looking downward. There's good news! God's with us through whatever we're going through, whether it be good, bad, or ugly. God has our back, which can comfort even the worst what-ifs that go through our heads. 5. 1 Peter 5:7"Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you". First Peter 5:6 (the verse before this one) says "Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you". Sometimes, the stress and anxiety we experience in a situation isn't because of the situation, it's because we can't control the situation. How many times have you tried to control something? (For me, it's a lot!) Have you ever thought about how much stress and anxiety from a situation could be relieved if it didn't go exactly your way? Having humility in a situation can combat some of the anxiety and stress you can get from a situation. (Yay!) So, the next time something in your life spins out of your control, chose to have humility in the situation and trust that God has the perfect plan for your life. Okay, moving on to verse seven! This verse tells us that if we're stressed out, tired, or have those what-ifs we've been talking about running through your head, we can lift those troubles up to God in prayer. He loves to hear about what we're going through! God loves us and cares for us, His children (John 3:16). In a way, verses six and seven go hand in hand. If you're going through a situation that's spiraling out of control, you can lift that situation up to God in prayer, asking Him for humility and guidence to get through the situation. Combating Fear How can you combat fears that pop into your head during the day? For one, you could post verses (like the five above) that are written on blank index cards in your Bible, car dashboard, mirror... anywhere you can cut, tape or glue! You can also memorize verses to help combat certain fears you know your prone to! We can find freedom in Christ from fears, no matter how big or small.
What are some other verses that can help combat fear? Share them in the comments below! If you're in a situation that endangers you (like abuse), tell a trusted adult or call 911.
